SnowSchool Helps 4th & 5th Graders Stay Active in Winter

SnowSchool, an education program sponsored by Atlas Snow-Shoe Company and the Winter Wildlands Alliance, is a winter field trip program that combines physical activity and science. The program assists teachers and environmental education specialists by providing science based lessons and life experience to their classes.

With 30,000 participants and 27 sites in 11 states, SnowSchool works with teachers to offer instruction in winter ecology. Atlas Snow-Show Company provides free snowshoes for the kids, teachers and chaperones to use.

In the weeks leading up to the outdoors field trip, children learn about winter ecology in the classroom, studying subjects such as identifying tracks made by wildlife, measuring snow depth or analyzing water content. During the field trip, led by education specialists, biologists, park rangers and other experts, the students put to use what they learned in the classroom. After the trip, back in the classroom, students review what they learned and participate in follow-up projects.

SnowSchool has sites in Colorado, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin. For full information about the program, please see the SnowSchool website.
